What established the EU?

The European Union was created out of the European Steel and Coal Community. The ESCC was created by France after World War II to politically and economically intertwine the countries of Germany and France in order to avoid another devastating war. The Treaty of Paris was written that established the ESCC and was signed by France and Germany in addition to Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
