In the first place, merely reading a book improves your ability to make sense of the world. It is that good for you. More obviously, the book may contain ideas and "people, places and things" that correspond to yours, and help to understand them, or laugh at them - or be made angry, too, an honest response to art.
Do not mistake up-to-date for relevant. The good old stuff is still good, and will still be good when much of today's flashy mush has been gratefully forgotten. As for relevance, at the very least, old fashioned books amusingly illustrate how things have changed and - and this can be at the same time - how things have not changed at all.
