un vieil / un vieux (masculine). The choice of the Word depends of the sound of the following Word: un vieux chapeau - un vieil homme - cet homme est vieux.

"the old man and the sea" = Le vieil homme et la mer

Very tricky when you begin to use the plural: des vieux hommes (you use "vieux" but there is now a "z" sound to liaise with "hommes")

un vieille (feminine): une vieille voiture, des vieilles filles ("vieilles filles" is a fixed expression meaning spinsters)
