In Britain the most widely-known hardwoods are the English oak, ash, yew, beech, willow, alder, elm, Apple, birch, elder, hazel, hornbeam, poplar and chestnut.

Each has its own properties and each was used historically for different tasks; cart wheels consisted of parts made from at least three different woods.
