Have that problem now - auto stores don't sell replacements. So far, I've traced it to the flasher assembly on the emergency flasher switch. But I need to see how to remove that switch and see if either the contacts are flakey, or the internals of the flasher are bad. If you have had this problem fixed, please let me know as well. David ndcarlson@aol.com I fixed this problem a few months ago by buying a new flasher module at the dealership. To replace it, I used a screwdriver to pull the emergency flasher button off. Luckily for me, the button didn't just pop off, but instead the whole assembly slid out. I did just get a recall in the mail about last week on this. You should be able to get it replaced for free now. From http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/67-int/2001/Volkswagen/jetta/gls-tdi/index.html (It appears to be true for all 2001 VW Jettas, and not just the GLS TDI model.) 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI NHTSA Recall ID Number: 04V584000 Recall Date: DEC 16, 2004 Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH Potential Units Affected: 410000 Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE HAZARD SWITCH AND FLASHER SYSTEM FUNCTION MAY DEGRADE OVER TIME BECAUSE OF DISTORTION AND MATERIAL TRANSFER OF THE CONTACTS OF CERTAIN HAZARD SWITCH RELAYS WHICH OCCURS DUE TO SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED ELECTRICAL CURRENT LOAD FROM HIGHER WATTAGE TURN SIGNAL BULBS. Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE TURN SIGNAL AND HAZARD FLASHER FUNCTION. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD FLASHER SWITCH/RELAY KIT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 31, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987. Notes: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC, VX
