What is the the function of a retention tank in a filtration system?

Depending upon the type of filter, it can be used for several different purposes (adding meds etc) but normally it is simply a place where the water sits either prior to or after being filtered. In some filtration set ups the retention tank is filled with algae and the water is oxegenated and purified even more before going into the aquarium.
