Why is pencil versatile and universal medium than any other art material?

Two possible reasons:

1. Inexpensive medium, abundant

2. Able to be made in variety of hardness to produce many different thickness and shading capabilities. Hard material can be sharpened for fine lines while softer "lead" can be used for lines and shading.
