What does de donde viene mean?

De donde es = Where is (singular noun) from?

If it were "De donde eres?" it would mean where are YOU from.

Cual es su origen = What is (it's, his, her) origin.

But split that sentence down the middle between the first es and the cual, because they basically mean the same thing.
