How does Brian relieve his thirst and why does he vomit in the book Hatchet?

Brian relieves his thirst by leaning over the lake and drinking directly from it. He ends up vomiting after drinking because he mistakenly eats too many berries that don't sit well in his stomach, which causes him to become sick.
