Who started last names?

Last names began to be used when there were too many people to be able to refer to them by only a first name. The first surnames were Words that told which family the person came from, such as "Peterson" (Peter's Son) and "Svensdottir" (Sven's Daughter). Names that referenced one's occupation came later. These were names such as "Taylor," "Goldsmith," and "Baker."
