Opium in its various forms have been used for centuries, but when heroin first hit western markets a company called 'Bayer' (the first company to market and even name heroin) advertised it as a 'non-addictive' and 'cure all' medicine which was easily and legally accessible throughout Victorian England, usually as laudanum - tinicture of opium and alcohol.
