Willie O'Ree was born on October 15, 1935, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He grew up in a large family, with a passion for hockey ignited at an early age. Despite facing challenges, including the loss of vision in one eye due to an injury, he persevered and played hockey at various levels. O'Ree's determination and talent eventually led him to become the first Black player in the NHL when he debuted with the Boston Bruins in 1958.
