The phalanx gave the citizens the responsibility of protecting the city in which they lived thus making the force stronger because of the motivation the citizens had to fight. This gave all citizens nearly equal shares in all aspects of life including the military, giving no man more glory than another as all men participated in the training and battle when crises came.
