The Permian extinction, occurring around 252 million years ago, was the most severe extinction event in Earth's history, leading to the loss of approximately 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrates. Insects, however, showed remarkable resilience during this period, with many surviving the drastic environmental changes. Post-extinction, insects diversified significantly, taking advantage of the ecological niches left vacant by the extinction of other species. This adaptive radiation contributed to the evolution of modern insect orders and their dominance in various ecosystems.
