The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) sued the World Wrestling Federation (then also WWF, now WWE) as the Federation was misusing it's 'W.W.F.' initials.

According to a 1994 agreement, the Federation had limited use of the initials overseas, and the Federation was severely violating it, particularly in merchandise.

WWE are allowed to refer to the company as World Wrestling Federation, only the initials are disused, which means WWE cannot take legal action against the initials' use, notable examples are:

  • The Ultimate Warrior signed Autographs in a hotel near WrestleMania XXIV, but as the signs all said 'Former WWF Champion', they could not prevent the signings
  • TNA refer to the WWE usually as WWF and thus cannot be prosecuted for using the company's name or any other reason.

The last WWE event to use the old WWF logo was the pay-per-view Insurrextion on 5 May 2002.
