Why were hedgehogs created?

All mammals evolved from a group of mammal-like reptiles call Cynodonts. The hedgehog lineage goes back to the time of the earliest mammals, 60-70 million years ago (mya). The ancestors of today's hedgehogs migrated from North America to Asia and then to Europe and Africa 58 - 23 mya. The fossil record is not very good, so it is difficult to determine exactly what species were the ancestors of today's hedgehogs.
