What was first blues or gospel?

Gospel Music originated before the blues, developing in the early 20th century from African American spirituals and hymns. While blues emerged as a distinct genre in the 1910s, it drew heavily from the emotional expressions found in gospel. Both genres share roots in African American musical traditions, but gospel's religious themes predate the secular storytelling common in blues.
