Why did the RUF use blood diamonds?

Blood diamonds get their name based on the blood of the people spilled to mine the stones, which are then used by terrorists and others to commit mayhem against humans.

The RUF -- Revolutionary United Front -- simply stepped into the diamond revenue stream in order to fund their revolution.
