The musician Prince is called Taffy in Britain. Why do they call him that?

I am British and I have never heard or read of anyone refering to Prince as Taffy. Taffy is a nickname that is sometimes used to refer to Welsh people. This is because the river Taff flows through the city of Cardiff, which is the capital of Wales.
