Not really. Both the male and female kiwi diligently incubate the egg for over two months. When the young chick hatches, it is well developed and able to fend for itself within a few days. The chick will stay with its parents for 4-6 weeks, or longer for the Tokoeka. Therefore, it would not be correct to say the kiwi parents abandon the chicks.
