What is an alto?

An "alto" voice is between the Soprano and a Tenor. The Term alto is used in choir to define a range BUT NOT a specific voice type. A trained contralto singer will have a wider range at the top and bottom of the choral alto range.

Male alto singers are usually known as "counter tenor" in some vocal circles. The term ''Counter Tenor'' usually refers to a male singing in falsetto to reach into the alto or sometimes even soprano range.

It is usually a young boys voice or a low female voice, the usual female range equivalent of a bass.

Occasionally men with Kallmann's syndrome, a condition which causes decreased functioning of the glands that produce sex hormones will have higher voices in the female ranges of the alto, mezzo-soprano, and soprano.

It is the musical part or section that is set higher the tenor but placed lower than the soprano.
