Who are the people of the book and why are they called that?

The people of the book are Jews and Christians, who are referred to as such in Islam because they are believed to have received divine revelations through their respective holy scriptures, the Torah and The Bible. Muslims acknowledge the legitimacy of these earlier revelations, viewing them as part of a continuous line of guidance from God.
