The Titan, Prometheus, created mankind after the image of the gods, but Zeus denied his request to give his creations the gift of fire (which was seen as divine in nature). Seeing his creations suffer without the life-giving warmth, Prometheus stole the fire and gave it to men anyway.

Zeus, in seeing that men now had the ability to make fire themselves, punished Prometheus harshly. Mankind, he decided, was also complicit, because they accepted the gift. So, Zeus decided that they would create a way to punish men as well.

With the help of the other gods and goddesses, he created Pandora, the first woman, and she was imbued with gifts from all the pantheon. She was given a large jar (or in more modern tellings, a box), and was escorted from Olympus by Hermes. She was told never to open the box, under any circumstances, but not what was in the box. Knowing that she was curious, the gods knew that she would eventually open the box, despite being told not to.

Once she came across men, she was greeted by their leader, Epimetheus (brother to Prometheus), and he took her as his wife. They put the box in a corner of their house, and Epimetheus made her promise to never open it, which she happily did. Over time, though, she became more and more curious about the box's contents, and eventually it got the better of her. Opening the box, she discovered that in it had been crammed all of the personifications of evil and harm, and that she had just loosed them on the world. She tried closing it again, but it was too late. Epimetheus soon discovered what she had done and scolded her for it (the first marital argument).

Pandora was devastated until she heard a small voice from the box, asking to be let out. When she opened the box again, she discovered that she had trapped the final spirit in the box, Hope. When released, Hope touched all the men that her brothers and sisters harmed, making them feel better. In the end it all worked out, and here we are today, with evil in the world, but always finding hope.
