What was José de San Martín's major accomplishment?

Jose was the Argentina general most notably remembered for his successful northern march liberating Chile and beginning the independence of Peru from the Spanish during the war for Independence of South America In Peru Jose turned over the forces to Simon where he had been fighting the Spanish in what is now Panama and Ecuador and then met Jose in Peru, Simon continued on and finalized the liberacion while Jose retired from the military and moved to France. Simon went on to be named dictator of Peru and later was elected and become presidente of the northern territory (including Peru, Panama and Ecuador). --King Richard--
