What is a jetty?

It's a small construction by the side of a river, lake or loch to allow small boats to be moved from land into the water, or to allow easy access to these craft without getting your feet wet.

In the US, the term is applied to breakwaters or barriers that project into a body of water for the purpose of establishing a harbor or entrance to a waterway.
