What does you're looking bright as a button this morning mean?

I would assume the person who says this to you is over 60 years old.....

alert, wide-awake, could mean you look clean/shiny/exceptionally nice.

buttons were originally made of metal (often brass) which was shiny when new (not so shiny and nice when old)
