In Basketball, a defensive player is allowed to remain in the opponent's key (or paint) for a maximum of three seconds if they do not have the ball. This is known as the three-second violation. However, if the player is actively guarding an opponent, they can stay in the key for longer without being penalized. Once the defending player steps out of the key or the offensive player with the ball moves, the count resets.
