flight nurses are well experienced nurses in intensive or emergency care (3 years prior) who fly for aeromedical companies. they invest time, such as 12 and 24 hour shifts to work, although they may do zero flights. the nurse is the "doctor" until arrival to the medical facility. the rn makes the decisions a doctor would, which is the reason why they must be experienced and certified in special criteria, such as pals and atls. flight nurses are special nurses and require an internal desire. i worl in a trauma center and many of our rn's fly; it is an Excellent job; the ones who fly make the best nurses, in most cases.
