It depends. Drinking in moderation is widely accepted in most cultures, and few cultures react negatively to the idea of having a drink in a social context (assuming one is of legal age to do so). There are many customs that include social drinking-- offering a guest at your home or at a party the beverage of his or her choice; selecting the right wine that goes along with the meal one is having; sitting with one's friends watching a sporting event and having a beer with them, etc. The problem is in drinking to excess: not everyone is content with one or two drinks. Some people tend towards Alcoholism, and for them, drinking is both dangerous and unhealthy. Also, some Alcoholic Beverages, even when used in moderation, are high in sugars and bad for people trying to diet. Additionally, drinking and then driving a car can potentially cause serious accidents. And finally, it should be noted that not everyone chooses to drink. If you are hosting an event, be sure to have interesting non-alcoholic beverages, in addition to the drinks with alcohol in them.
