Yes. ngaio is a very light colored hard wood. it comes from the mouse-hole tree of New Zealand, which is poisonous. This tree usually lives near to the coasts. The wood is often burled, but can also be straight grained. It is very hard, and can sometimes seem almost brittle. It was once used in the late 19th century for making gunstocks. It has been introduced to several other countries, and in California is considered an invasive pest species. I have several pieces of this wood that have been seasoning for a couple of years. I plan to cut them into lumber, and then to use them for several creative projects, (including gunstocks).
