This shouldn't be listed under "US in WW2", because the Desert Rats is the name given to the British 7th Armoured Division. Sometimes it's also applied to the whole of the 8th Army, of which the division was only a part. But it's not a US force at all.

The first commander of the division was Major General Sir Michael O'Moore Creagh (from 1939 to 1941); in 1941 he was replaced by Major General William Gott, who was replaced by Major General J C Campbell.

The British 8th Army also had a succession of commanders, but the most famous was General (later Field Marshal) Bernard Montgomery.
