Mars is often referred to as the "Red Planet" due to its reddish appearance, which is caused by iron oxide, or rust, on its surface. The landscape features vast plains, towering volcanoes like Olympus Mons, and deep canyons such as Valles Marineris. Its surface is also dotted with impact craters and polar ice caps that change with the seasons. The thin atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, contributing to its cold and arid conditions.
