Well a very famous one is Cass Sunstein, who the Obama administration have nominated as head of a whole host of regulatory bodies that would have powers to oversee the treatment of animals improved. That's a very topical example, but it's well known about mainly because of the supposed extremity of his views (such as that an animal theoretically should be entitled to legal representation and have the ability to sue in court).
