After 1945, Vietnam was ruled by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), led by the Communist Party under Ho Chi Minh. Following the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was temporarily divided into North and South, with the North under communist rule and the South governed by a non-communist regime, initially led by President Ngo Dinh Diem. This division set the stage for the Vietnam War, which lasted until the reunification of Vietnam in 1975 under communist control.
