What can you use to get rid of bed bugs?

The first step you need to take is to remove bed linen, clothing, soft furnishings, shoes etc. which may be infected - remember bed bugs will hide out in the most obscure places in the day time, only coming out to feed at night. Place all of these items in plastic bags and seal them whilst in the infested room to prevent the transfer of bugs to other areas in the house.

Wash bed linen and other washable items on a hot setting in the washing machine. There may be items which cannot be washed, these can be either put in a hot tumble dryer for about 10 minutes.

Always clean down any work surfaces with which these items have come into contact. Be sure to use disinfectant.

Once everything is washed and dried or decontaminated place them into clean plastic bags and reseal them for protection.

The biggest task of all is completely clearing and cleaning the room from top to bottom. Firstly get rid of any clutter such as news papers, magazine etc. Bag them, seal the bags tightly and dispose of them.

The vacuum cleaner is the best tool you can use to clear the room of bugs, eggs and nymphs. Use it on furniture, curtains, carpets and probably most importantly the mattress, box spring and bed frame and slats as well as inside drawers, closets and so on. The various tools which can be attached to the vacuum can get into all the crevices and cracks.

Another great weapon to use in the battle to get rid of bed bugs is a steam cleaner. By using retracing your steps with a high pressure, high temperature steam cleaner you can kill bed bugs at every stage of development including eggs.

At this point you might consider using a non toxic bed bug spray or perhaps bed bug dust.

Don't be fooled into thinking that you are now completely bed bug free. It only takes a few eggs to have escaped the treatment for a new infestation to begin. Therefore it is wise to repeat the whole process after a few days and then as often as necessary.
