By "red dirt", if you mean the iron tinted red clay of the Southern Piedmont areas, then I can certainly testify that YES, sunflowers do grow in red dirt.
If you mean the red dirt of the Western regions, then I should mention that the upper state areas between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains produce the largest yields of sunflower seed oil in the country. It's a magnificent thing to see acres and acres of sunflowers in full bloom.
