Richie Havens's performance at Woodstock was scheduled well in

advance. But he was scheduled to play later on that day meaning he

was not the opening performer. Nothing could have prepared him for

the circumstances he found there. Because of traffic problems, none

of the early acts arrived on time, the concert was nearly three

hours late, and Havens was the first performer to appear before the

restive throng.
