between 1887-1904 Hurst Burnt leather classics came out which was the first types of books then the alligator skin then, the hard covers were between 1904 and 1919 no later publishings would of been possible! because they closed their presses The Scarlet letter was published at the same time as Lucile another popular book of that time period they hard to say EXACTLY but 1889-1904 if its soft cover and hard covers had to be closer to 1903-1916 sorry i can't be more specific.
