Why is the the Nobel Peace Prize award and for what?

The prize is often given to leaders of warring nations who manage to end the fighting or to outside leaders who manage to negotiate a settlement between countries who are at war. Others winners found organizations that promote peace or brotherhood or provide humanitarian aide or work to promote human rights.
