Why is cockroaches pests?

Just the same as anything else, they evolved from simpler creatures to fill the role their species occupies. Natural selection. Cockroaches are generally hearty and reproduce quickly, so they are not likely to die out while the surface of the Earth is still remotely inhabitable.
