I assume you are talking about colonial times.
The mentality at the time was basically if a culture was technologically lesser, than so were the people. To the victor go the spoils. You can't really look at this primitive time period with 21st century eyes, human rights was non existent; keep in mind that this was a time when woman were burned alive for having red hair.
Today, most conflict arises from a never ending circle of hate because people can't let go of the past, if its race, religion or whatever.
It's always "I was pulled over cause I'm black," or "I was mugged cause I'm white." Which just starts the cycle all over again.
