Chows are more intelligent than other dogs, so inexperienced handlers often have trouble training and socializing them. Sending them to a professional trainer is pointless, because a chow will not take orders from a stranger -even if it understands the command. But they are fanatically loyal and obedient and easy to train for the small group of people they love.

If this is your first dog, or you have small children; pick another breed. If you know how to handle a dog and do not anthropomorphize them too much; the chow is an outstanding companion and guardian.

Unfortunately for many trainers; you have to be smarter than the dog.
