Pregnant women don't necessarily have to stay away from cats, but they should steer clear of litter boxes. The reason for this is cat urine contains a parasitic organism called toxoplasma gondii. While it is extremely rare, this parasite is capable of causing severe abnormalities as well as growth problems in the child.
