It may also be a handprint to symoblise union between oneself and others, or simply as an attractive and evocative image which stands out, and therefore has greater visual impact, than a more detailed tattoo.

Handprints have been used in cave paintings by primitive society for thousands of years, so are also representative of contact with our past and with our primitive ancestry, common to all humans.
