Of course Esme was married when she was human. Her first child was born dead. She committed suicide unable to take that, by jumping form a cliff. Everyone thought she was dead and didn't even bother to take her to ICU. Then Dr. Cullen heard her heart beat and changed her to a vampire as he knew she couldn't live through the injuries.
