Squirrels have babies at about the age of one year. Squirrels have babies in the spring. At least this holds true for tree squirrels living in areas where winters are cold. This gives the babies time to grow up before winter hits.
I once raised a baby squirrel that had fallen from the nest, starting when she was so tiny she could barely crawl. With guidance from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, I was able to successfully raise her, starting with feeding her special infant formula.
The next spring, she came into season, and we had hundreds of hopeful males singing outside our home. Finally she was taken to an area where there were no humans for her to climb up on. This was done while she was in season because squirrels mate for life and while in season she could pick up a mate and learn from the mate what to eat and other life lessons. Squirrels are very affectionate and social animals, who love to play tricks, particularly hide and seek and "surprise!"
