Simply answered, you get to know how other people have responded to things and events. It informs your worldview and makes it a lot more rich and sophisticated. This can be really helpful when you're voting on a certain issue, or for a certain candidate.

You also get to analyze things in a certain way. We all go to the gas station and sometimes shake our heads at the price of gas, right? Having a good understanding of the world political climate and-equally importantly-how those things got that way helps you connect the dots and answer "Why?" Even if you don't vote (you really, really should though), be an informed, activist netizen. Blog, twitter, Tumblr are all good forums for discussing world politics. Cyberactivism, let's say. Studying world history is just like traveling overseas; it helps you realize the world is bigger than your little corner of it. It connects you to other people.
