This same exact thing was happening to me, on my 1988 300TE wagon. I replaced the ignition coil, and it never ever ever happened again. I would start with this. Maybe, before you spend $90 or so on a new ignition coil, see if you can find one in a junkyard, or out of a wrecked/parts car. I'm a cheap guy, and always try to avoid paying full price for something I can rustle up for a little less. Good luck to you! Eric.
