What are feeding habits for a flatworm?

I wouldn't exactly say that they have a specific "niche".

They do play an important role in biochemical memory and stem cell research.

They are VERY important for stem cell research because of their extreme rates of regeneration and their ability to regenerate even when cut up into shreds.
