Extinction is when a species of any kind literally dies out. The populations of that species have dwindled and dwindled in number until there are no longer any opportunities for the last of their kind to reproduce. When they are all dead, there is simply NO way to get them back; they are gone forever.

Worldwide extinctions are rare, whereas local extinctions are more common.

Extinctions have happened naturally for millions of years, because Earth's environment is constantly changing. A species will lose its habitat or have its niche occupied by a more successful species. Human activities result in extinction through several means, including hunting, pollution, introducing invasive species, or destroying habitats through industrial or urban development.

So far, a lot of animals are on the brink of extinction, like the giant panda and other mammals.
